Dealing With Cramps in Your Side
Side cramps (or stitches) are often caused by dehydration so it's always important to make sure you're properly hydrated. About an house before you run (or exercise) you should have one bottle of water. Right before you run take sips of water. Take about 6 to 8 ounces for every 20 minutes you run. Take deep breaths while running. Short breaths may increase your risk of cramping.
Here are a few other suggestions to help you deal with side cramps:
•Time your eating. Having too much food in your stomach may increase cramping. It may put too muchg force on the ligaments. Avoid eating about 90 minutes before you run. Of course, we are all different. This needs to be an experiment in progress for you. Little tweaks make a big difference.
•Stretch. Whenever you have a cramp, wherever it is. Stretching may prevent or help with a cramp.
For you sides. Do a side bend with your arm over your head. Raise your right arm straight up and lean toward the left. Then switch sides.
•Slow down your pace until pain lessens. Pushing through the pain is not always the right thing. Listen to your body.
- Breathe deep to stretch the diaphragm.
